The town being close to the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, was of crucial strategic importence during British Raj.
In the town you can still find the state farm building which was the base for British Army.
As a result of military settlement, a large no. of people from all over India made the town their home, which include the people from Rajasthan, UP, MP, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh etc.
The main language spoken in the city is Marathi with a typical Hingoli flavour.
