3 seasons of salvage archaeology was done prior to the constructiin of the dam. There are several interesting things about the site, both historically and prehistorically. Briefly. Historically, it was the site of the first indian reservation in California. In 1975 there were local residents whose parents and grandparents were buried there. A log flume was constructed through the river vally from around Bass Lake to Fresno. A log tenders home was located just north of the dam site. A hand dug well at the home held Spanish marked artifacts. There was a trading post located just above the dam site. The traders were a dentist and his partner, Major Walker. Major walker was the commander and founder of The Mariposa Battalion, chartered by the State of California to prevent horse and cattle rustling , supposedly by local indians. While chasing indians, the Battalion were the first whites to see Yosemite Valley. Prehistorically, the river was a seasonal campsite for local indian bands as evidenced by numerous pictographs and acorn grinding holes in rock platforms all along the river.
