Question about chemical formula in the lead

The lead gives the chemical formula as being (CH3)19(CH3) which, in my experience, the brackets indicate a side chain. But, it obviously has no side chains. Especially at the terminal ends. That wouldn't exactly be a side chain.

So, what do the brackets here indicate? There's nothing special I can see about the first and last 3 carbons. I've not seen similar formulas used for other straight chain hexanes.

Also, if it has 21 carbons, 3 + 19 + 3 is 25 carbons. So, that just adds further confusion. VoidHalo (talk) 17:48, 24 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Okay. I see now that I was misreading it as C3 rather than CH3. So, I get that these are the terminal methyl groups at the end. Likely included because they are CH3 rather than CH2 like the carbons in the middle of the chain.
Writing out the previous post and reading it over kind of put everything together for me.
