[edit]

Add new section 'Controversy'. Move paragraph 'In July 2008...after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.' from the 'History and reception'-section into the new section.

- Alternative title for the new section: 'Similarity to Miffy'

Make the following modifications to aforementioned paragraph:

- Change 'A court in Amsterdam' to 'The Court of Amsterdam', as it is the name of the court which presided over the case.

--- Add hyperlink text reference to the (Dutch) Wikipedia page for Court of Amsterdam ('Rechtbank Amsterdam'). https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rechtbank_Amsterdam

- Add information regarding why the court rules in favour of Mercis. See quote below for information.

--- Original text (in Dutch), then the translation, taken from court document linked under both:

'The thick lines, the ratio between head and body, the ears, the dress with the collar, and the posing of the hands and feet are practically identical to [Miffy]. What is also similar, is that the mouth and nose are one (with [Miffy] in the shape of an "Cross of Saint Andrew" and with Kathy in the shape of a circle). The only clear difference between [Miffy] and Kathy, is the bow which Kathy wears on one of her ears.'.

The information above is taken from this proceedings document regarding the legal case, from section 4.5: https://uitspraken.rechtspraak.nl/details?id=ECLI:NL:RBAMS:2010:BO2607

- Add that Sanrio also tried to appeal the injunction, before Mercis suggested a settlement in the form of a €150,000 donation to aid the victims of the disaster.

--- Source: Current reference 41 of this Wikipedia article

--- Additional source, quoting the director of Mercis, Marja Kerkhof, regarding the origins of the settlement. Original quote, then translation, then source (in Dutch):

'Wij hebben voorgesteld het zo op te lossen... Sanrio was meteen voor. Het leek ons beter het geld en de energie die zo’n zaak kost op deze manier te besteden.’.

'We proposed to solve [our legal dispute] like this [by suggesting a settlement in the form of a donation]. Sanrio agreed immediately. It seemed better to us, to spend the money and energy which a case like this costs in this manner.'.

The part of the article dealing with the lawsuit needs cleanup, but in my opinion, less detail, not more. Last I checked the wording at Miffy was better, and some might be copied to here from there. Siawase (talk) 17:49, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps true, though I'd argue that some extra detail about the lawsuit could be relevant.
If not that, then at least granting the lawsuit a separate section where it's talked about it, given the significance. I would also argue that a separate section would aid readability: the current article goes from the annual sales of 2013, then the Miffy lawsuit, then suddenly back to financial numbers of 2014.
On a related side-note, changing 'A court in Amsterdam' to 'The Court of Amsterdam' seems like a no-brainer, given that it's not some random court. Adding a hyperlink reference to the 'Rechtbank Amsterdam'-Wikipedia page is optional, if I'm honest, but I wouldn't be against it. DiaH201 (talk) 19:38, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before posting an edit request. Please continue the discussion here on the talk page and attempt to reach a consensus on how the article should be changed. Day Creature (talk) 17:59, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Change "Yuko Shimizu was the original designer of Hello Kitty." to "Yuko Shimizu is the original designer of Hello Kitty."

The original designer of Hello Kitty has not changed, and Yuko Shimizu is still alive. ~2026-10026-35 (talk) 00:38, 14 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Not done, but Fixed, per MOS:CAPTION guidelines. Deacon Vorbis (carbon  videos) 00:51, 14 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Peer Review from Selma

[edit]

After reading through this article about Hello Kitty, it is a strong and informative article about the cartoon character. It has a large amount of information on how Hello Kitty started off and became popular, and includes information about how she was designed. This article includes details about the brand Sanrio which created Hello Kitty and the developers, which makes it strong. Although this article is strong, there are areas for improvement. One thing that could be changed is the amount of information that is used in this article. There is a large amount of information that is not all necessary, and could be removed. For example, some information about the products of Hello Kitty could be removed from this to avoid having too much information. Overall, this article is strong and could be improved by removing information that isn’t needed. Selmajune (talk) 04:25, 26 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello Kitty video games list split

[edit]

If anyone is interested in is splitting the video games section into its own article similarly to List of Sonic the Hedgehog video games, IGN has a good preliminary database of games here. Not sure if they have all of Hello Kitty's games, but there's already 120 games listed, which is a pretty daunting task (especially because it only lists each game's initial release date).

I was hoping to also create a broader Sanrio franchise video games list, probably organized by main character (most characters do not have as many video games as Hello Kitty), but the scope of these two tasks means that it'll probably be a while before I'd get to it. In addition to the IGN database, Famitsu has a database of Japanese games that includes Famitsu scores and sometimes review excerpts. Instructions for accessing it at Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Reference library/Famitsu Siawase (talk) 09:21, 6 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
