Interesting well written page but I'm still confused about what the direction of the head is relative to. A Google suggests: "in relation to the animal's directional heading with respect to the environment in the horizontal (yaw) plane." http://www.scholarpedia.org/article/Head_direction_cells#:~:text=Jeffrey%20Taube%20(2009)%2C%20Scholarpedia,%2C%204(12)%3A1787.&text=Head%20direction%20cells%20(HD%20cells,the%20horizontal%20(yaw)%20plane.

But I guess this might not be true for all species
