I strongly recommend that this article not be moved to Wiktionary. As it is now it is little more than a definition, but it can bear a great deal of elaboration and fleshing out (like the Allah article). Babajobu 12:54, 22 July 2005 (UTC)
"... particularly as an epithet for the Tetragrammaton, when avoiding God's more formal title, Adonai ('my master')." I'm not sure if I'm misreading this. Jews do not use HaShem to avoid using the title Adonai. HaShem or Adonai are used to avoid saying the personal name of God, JHWH (the Tetragrammaton). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Agbneill (talk • contribs) 05:34, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
What I am trying to say above is better explained in the article "Jehovah" — Preceding unsigned comment added by Agbneill (talk • contribs) 06:07, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
And even better under "Hashem" in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_God_in_Judaism#Hashem — Preceding unsigned comment added by Agbneill (talk • contribs) 09:01, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
Remove the "People with given name" and "People with surname" sections?
[edit]The people listed in this article with the given name or surname "Hashem" seem to all be named a variant of Arabic "هاشم" which is etymologically unrelated to the Jewish epithet for God, and instead means "Breaker (of bread)". It makes no sense to include them in an article discussing "HaShem" in the sense of the epithet for the Jewish God. ~2026-12399-59 (talk) 17:36, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
- (Disclaimer: I don't know the languages.) I see your point. Perhaps those sections should instead be moved into Hashem (disambiguation) (which is currently a redirect to here), and the hatnotes here should then be adjusted to reference that disambiguation page. - There being no objections, I have just done that reorganisation. Feline Hymnic (talk) 09:30, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
