"Other mechanisms may play a role in handedness, for example hormone signalling. Medland et al.[21] found a CAG repeat length variant in the androgen receptor gene (AR) that is positively correlated with left-handedness in females, and negatively correlated in males. This same variant is positively correlated with testosterone levels in males, and negatively correlated in females." This may help to explain why there are more left-handed men than women (around 12% in men versus 10% in women globally).[3] However, another study has found that this variant is instead associated with mixed-handedness in males (and not left-handedness), conflicting with the original results.[22]
One citation provided is a meta-study, that doesn't give explanation on why "left handedness" is more prevalent in males, just that it is more prevalent in males, the other citation provided states the exact opposite of the above text:

[edit]Yes handiness means skilled. So for people who write with the left, using the right means wrong. With a likelihood to be more clumsy.
Still I like that many can use both efficiently.There are so many tasks that include both fine motor and gross motor skills that every one should have a different preference fro writing, chopping wood and use both for carrying things. The truly dumb would open a fridge door, take out the juice, put it on the counter and then closed the door using only one hand.Forcing people to convert caused enough loss, but to limit your self to the concept of being right handed or left-handed when we have two is truly disabling.

The Roman military serves as a primary historical case study for the advantages of tactical uniformity, illustrating how mechanical constraints in group combat mirrored and amplified earlier evolutionary pressures.
Roman Infantry Mechanics and Uniformity
[edit]The Roman military system prioritized collective discipline over individual prowess, utilizing the scutum (shield) and gladius (short sword) within a rigid tactical framework. This system relied on a "handedness monopoly" for structural integrity:
- Interlocking Defense: Legionaries held the shield in the left hand to create a continuous defensive wall. Because each shield partially protected the unshielded right side of the soldier to their left, a universal left-handed shield grip was required to maintain the formation's seal.
- The Tactical Gap: A left-handed soldier (holding a shield in the right hand) would create a physical "clash" with the soldier to their right. This misalignment resulted in a defensive gap, compromising the unit’s protection against enemy projectiles and thrusts.
- Kinetic Interference: The Roman fighting style utilized a rhythmic, piston-like stabbing motion. In the confined space of a formation, a left-handed combatant would likely collide with the elbow or shield of their right-handed peers, disrupting the unit's offensive momentum and "stabbing rhythm."
Evolutionary Drivers: The Arm as Proto-Shield
[edit]The mechanics observed in Roman formations are theorized to be an amplification of much earlier evolutionary pressures. Long before the invention of organized weaponry, the human body’s internal asymmetry dictated defensive behavior.
The Heart-Protection Hypothesis
[edit]Because the heart is positioned primarily on the left side of the thoracic cavity, early hominids likely utilized the left arm as a de facto proto-shield. In unarmored combat, using the left arm to parry or block strikes provided a higher survival rate for vital organs. Consequently, the right hand became the dedicated offensive tool for striking.
Group-on-Group Synchronization
[edit]As early humans transitioned from individual skirmishing to coordinated tribal raids, synchronized handedness became a critical survival advantage. Groups with harmonized handedness experienced:
- Fewer Conflicting Strikes: Increased efficiency when fighting in close proximity.
- Lethality Advantage: A right-handed strike naturally travels diagonally toward an opponent's left side (the heart/liver area). In group combat, a synchronized line of right-handed attackers targets the most vulnerable side of their opponents simultaneously.
So, weapon/tool using groups with more harmonized handedness had a fighting advantage over other weapon/tool using groups with less harmonized handedness, where harmonised right-handedness is more lethal than harmonised left-handedness. Also hunting big game would be more efficient where the tool/weapon using hunters coordinated their attacks, did not clash tools/weapons during strikes and did not injure themselves during the hunt. Group on group raids and war (and efficient big game hunting) is a strong evolutionary pressure and drove us towards harmonized handedness and this handedness towards right-handedness.
Persistence of the "Southpaw" Advantage
[edit]Despite the evolutionary benefits of uniformity in large-scale war, left-handedness persists through negative frequency-dependent selection. In one-on-one combat or unorganized skirmishes, a left-handed fighter (a "southpaw") possesses a competitive edge. Because the majority of combatants are conditioned to defend against right-handed attacks, the atypical angles of a left-handed opponent provide a tactical surprise.
