Population?

[edit]

What's the source of a population of 43,000 in 2004? The official census figure of 2004 is 8,545. That's a big difference. Or is there a Hadiboh metropolitan area?--Ratzer (talk) 05:50, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Referenced numbers are always better. Feel free to change the article. - Darwinek (talk) 08:43, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Right now the article claims "estimates putting the population at 90,000 inhabitants in 2020. However, due to large migration from mainland Yemen due to the Yemeni civil war, the population is estimated to have gone up to 150,000 since the early 2020s". These are numbers for the entire island according to the source: "Socotra has a population of some 90,000 people, but in the last five years the number has increased dramatically because of the arrival of people fleeing the war in mainland Yemen, with some statistics estimating the population at 150,000. Most live in Hadibo, the capital." The last census of 2004 says 8454 inhabitants. Quite a population explosion then. And we don't know how many of them live in the city proper and and how many in the surrounding towns. I would suggest sticking to the facts and mention that estimates vary wildly.
