Definitions of hackers, crackers, and phreaks under history seem wrong

no citations seem to be provided, and from long time anecdotal experience I do not believe the definitions to be the ones commonly in use during the 21st century for computing. The term "Hackers" both had a coding use and a computer security use. The first was hacking code together, the second was usually meant to break into a security system. Crackers were most often attributed to people who compromised software to allow pirating. I do not believe they were ever considered unskilled and relying on "luck". I mostly heard the term "phreakers" over "phreaks" but both were pretty clearly derived from "hacking" the phone system (phreaking, captain crunch, etc), not as a more skilled hacker. ~2026-30997-91 (talk) 02:08, 24 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Yes. There's a lot of cleanup to do at the moment on these and related articles. I'm currently taking a swing at Hacker, security hacker, and the various hats, but this is a good area for a new editor to start making changes based on modern sources. Joe (talk) 12:35, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
