Crew

[edit]

On the decommissioning of HMS HERO 1943 from RN to RCN, HMCS CHAUDIERE what happened to the crew of the HERO, did it remain intact upon the the Canadian Ship or did it re-assigned to a new ship or split up amonst the fleet. I am interested as my maturnal grandfather Fred Bilton, KX 100031 served upon Hero Feb-Jun 1940 then to HMS NILE. I am wondering as I gather HMS NILE was like Victory and HMS Royal Arthur i.e a land base at Alexandria. Fred was a Stoker and served in the Navy until 1946. The Ministry of defense says it has lost his records from Nov 1940, if anyone can remmemder Fred or what the procedure with crew from decommissioned vessels was please get in touch. Principally since tragically Fred died in 1949 from a freak accident whilst playing football in his dinner hour, where he broke his leg and died 3 weeks later. My mother has no memory or information on his life, I would like to tell her a little bit about his War service if possible. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.157.117.36 (talkcontribs) 07:17, 2 October 2006
