Which is which?

[edit]

On Denny Island (Canada), there's a mention of an HMS Coromandel, under the command of D'Arcy Anthony Denny. I would guess it's the 1856 frigate, not the 1855 paddle vessel; did both serve in China? Didn't want to make the wrong dab....Skookum1 (talk) 21:23, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Actually the mention says "paddle gunboat" and doesn't mention frigate class, so now I'm oconfused..."wooden paddle despatch vessel" as this page calls the 1855 one sounded to me at first like a rowed launch...will one of you RN specialists please clarify - and I'd think Denny may need a bioSkookum1 (talk) 21:25, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
If it says paddle vessel it must be HMS Coromandel (1855). Terminology at the time was flexible for these early steam vessels, despatch vessel, gunboat and frigate could be used to refer to the same type of ship. Screw propulsion was entirely different though. Benea (talk) 21:45, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
