Dubious
[edit]The "Queen of Nassau" section says she was renamed MV Queen of Nassau (around 1924). I've flagged this as dubious, because the Infobox and Description section both say she was powered by a triple expansion steam engine. So wouldn’t that make her a steamship, rather than a motor vessel? Was she re-engined at some point? Does anybody know? Xyl 54 (talk) 23:29, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Xyl 54: the reference cited makes no mention of any such conversion but it seems pedantic to tag the name change as dubious because of a mistake in the prefix. I've therefore removed the prefix and the tag. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 21:49, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

- Are you the Joszef Frey that was involved in the diving excursion? If so, this is a major WP:COI. That being said, the stuff about the lionfish and the "abrade corals" absolutely not necessary. The names of the divers, absolutely not necessary. The latin names of the fish, not necessary. In the lead, you say twice that she was the nucleus of the RCN, that can be trimmed. You might want to add that the navy was established in 1910, well after the ship was acquired. Mention of prefix only required at first mention. [edit]The current HMCS Canada article does not fully reflect subsequent scholarship concerning the vessel's significance in the development of Canadian naval capability, nor does it incorporate archaeological research conducted since the wreck's identification in the early 2000s. The proposed revisions are based primarily upon the academic research of maritime archaeologist Tane Renata Casserley (East Carolina University), the archaeological investigations undertaken by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (NOAA/ONMS), and the results of the HMCS Canada Expedition 2025 conducted in collaboration with NOAA's Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Wreck Site

Initially known as an unidentified wreck site, subsequent archaeological investigations led to its identification as the former HMCS Canada and SS Queen of Nassau. The identification was confirmed through a combination of historical research, site mapping, and analysis of the vessel's surviving structural features. Between 2001 and 2005, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) conducted a series of archaeological surveys of the wreck. These investigations produced baseline site maps, photomosaics, and structural documentation that established HMCS Canada as one of the most significant Canadian shipwrecks located outside Canadian waters. The surveys also provided the first detailed archaeological assessment of the vessel's condition and historical significance. In December 2025, the HMCS Canada Expedition lead by Joseph Frey, Vice President, Executive Committee of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, conducted the most comprehensive survey of the wreck to date in collaboration with NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. Areas of greatest deterioration were observed in exposed sections of the superstructure and in portions of the vessel modified during her 1912 reconstruction. The circumstances of the vessel's sinking have long been the subject of archaeological investigation. Contemporary accounts reported that flooding was followed by a boiler explosion before the vessel sank on 2 July 1926. Earlier archaeological surveys found limited physical evidence supporting this account. However, analysis of the 2025 photogrammetric model identified previously undocumented fractures on both the port and starboard sides of the hull adjacent to the boiler room. Researchers concluded that these features may represent physical evidence consistent with the historically reported boiler explosion, although additional investigation will be required to determine their exact origin. Today, the wreck of HMCS Canada is recognized as both an important archaeological resource and a significant artificial reef ecosystem within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Ongoing research continues to improve understanding of the vessel's history, construction, loss, and long-term preservation.
Ecology
[edit]The wreck of HMCS Canada has developed into a significant artificial reef ecosystem within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Over nearly a century of submersion, the vessel has become colonized by a diverse assemblage of corals, sponges, algae, and other marine organisms, creating habitat for numerous fish and invertebrate species. The wreck's steel structure provides both shelter and feeding opportunities, contributing to its ecological importance within the surrounding marine environment. NOAA ecological surveys conducted during the early 2000s established baseline information regarding the biological communities associated with the wreck. Follow-up assessments conducted in conjunction with the 2025 HMCS Canada Expedition documented substantial changes in the site's ecology and demonstrated the continuing value of the wreck as a long-term monitoring site for marine ecosystem change. The wreck supports a variety of reef fish species, including the Atlantic goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara), one of the largest reef fishes in the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel's internal spaces, hull openings, and surrounding debris field provide habitat for large predatory fish as well as numerous smaller reef-associated species. One of the most significant ecological changes documented at the site has been the expansion of invasive lionfish (Pterois volitans and Pterois miles). NOAA surveys conducted between 2001 and 2005 did not report lionfish on the wreck. By 2025, researchers documented numerous lionfish occupying the site, reflecting the broader spread of the species throughout the western Atlantic and Caribbean. The wreck has consequently become a useful location for monitoring the ecological impacts of invasive lionfish on native reef communities. Researchers have also documented increasing evidence of human impacts on the site. Lost anchors, anchor chain, fishing nets, monofilament fishing line, and other fishing-related debris have been observed on and around the wreck. These materials can damage both the vessel's structure and the biological communities that inhabit it. Fishing gear may abrade corals and sponges, entangle marine organisms, and accelerate deterioration of historically significant portions of the wreck. The ecological significance of HMCS Canada extends beyond its historical value as a shipwreck. The site serves as both a cultural heritage resource and an important marine habitat, illustrating the complex relationship between underwater archaeological sites and the ecosystems that develop around them over time.
