HMAS Jeparit - Union problems

I served in HMAS Jeparit as a junior engineer officer - Merchant Navy for 5 trips in 1971, sailing with the RAN contingent. It was a very happy and fulfilling arrangement and many of us, RAN and MN types, have maintained a close friendship in the half century that has passed since our Vietnam days.

It is not widely known but it was only the Seamens Union of Australia, a Moscow aligned organisation that banned the vessel. There were 6 other unions representing the deck and engineer officers, radio officer, shipwright, cooks and stewards serving in the vessel. We were supplying Australian servicemen who needed our support. They were our mates, brothers and sons. We owed them and did our best. We copped abuse from some of those in the anti-war movement and the members of the SUA who toed their party line.

The SUA doesn't exist any longer and only the two unions representing deck and engineer officers continue. The SUA has morphed into a tiny sub-group of another militant union, the CFMEU.

Loading and unloading of the MV (HMAS ) Japarit in Australia and South Vietnam

After the commissioning of the MV (HMAS) Japarit the loading and unloading of war stores was the responsibility of 30 Terminal Squadron, Royal Australian Engineer Corps based at Middle Head, NSW. The loading in Australia took place in Welsh Bay NSW and the Army Terminal Troop worked on a rotational 12 hour shift. The Engineer Squadron was supported by a number of army units delivering cargo to the wharf and then took control and command of loading the cargo with its Movement and Terminal Troop operators.

In South Vietnam the 30 Terminal Squadron Detachment of Movement and Terminal Troop operators were responsible for the unloading and reloading of cargo supported by drivers and vehicles from the Royal Australian Service Corps and operators from the Armoured Corps for the movement of APC's after being unloaded and discharged from the ship. 203.164.124.231 (talk) 05:54, 2 June 2025 (UTC)
