HCS prefix
[edit]I'm asking this question here because of the article's recency and its decoding of the HCS prefix, hoping that someone with more hardcopy or other sources than I have at my disposal can answer it. After a lot of googling, I came up with these words in the EIC article to decode the HCS as a target for the HCS DAB page. The British Library source should be pretty sound, but if anyone else has something useful to confirm either "ship" or "service" in this context, it would be useful to have a definitive record of this in Wikipedia. - Hi @Laterthanyouthink: The historian C. Northcote Parkinson says HCS=Honourable Company's Ship. The book on the Wadia builders at Bombay Dockyard says HCS=Honourable Company's Service, BUT, the same site says HMS=His Majesty's Service. "Service" versus "Ship" may reflect different authors' comfort or discomfort with using the word ship as generic for vessel at a time when people distinguished ships from brigs, sloops, schooners, etc. I would suggest the DAB redirect target use both versions.
