Unsourced content

[edit]

The 'BLP sources' template has been on this page for ten years, and most parts of this incredibly detailed page have no citations whatsoever. Is it time to begin removing unsourced content -- which would be most of it? Citruswinter (talk) 04:44, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Autobiography

[edit]

It seems highly likely that this article is either autobiographical or the product of original research with privileged access to the subject (possibly ghostwritten). I will add the autobiography template unless there is substantial disagreement.

  • The article was written almost entirely by a single editor.
  • The tone is promotional and uncritically positive, with frequent name-dropping and enthusiastic flourishes ("more each week!").
  • For a subject with a long public career, there is no mention of criticism, controversy, professional disagreement, or setbacks. No third-party opinions are cited, positive or negative; some passages contain unattributed praise ("notable", "notably", "ranging").
  • Many details suggest an insider perspective -- e.g. "private gala concert", "For this he had to reconstruct all the original score by ear", "the following day", "directing from the corner flag!" -- and the description of the English Chamber Choir is more extensive than in that choir's own article.
  • There are just a handful of references and these are confined to the first few sentences.

I attempted to verify three specific claims through online sources and found no corroboration, namely that:

  • The Byzantine Festival presented events in Plovdiv in June 1999, with Protheroe involved.
  • Protheroe conducted the "Buenos Aires Symphony Orchestra and Chorus" (additionally, it seems no orchestra exists under that name).
  • In 1974, Protheroe was recruited by the BBC as a scriptwriter for Radio 3.

Given these issues, the article appears to be based overwhelmingly on unverified insider knowledge rather than published, independent sources. Citruswinter (talk) 14:52, 12 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
