Heavy Political Bias

Gusano is a term that has absolutely never been used to define "Latin Americans" as a whole, whether in the US or abroad. I just reread the source that says this, and I couldn't find any comment that the term is for Latin Americans in general. For that reason, I cut out that statement in this Wiki page. Mangokeylime (talk) 17:30, 5 June 2025 (UTC)

Primary Sources only?

The vast majority of the sources cited in this article are from primary American based sources. This article seems more like red scare and anti-Cuba propaganda, then a neutral history of the term discussed. 73.189.132.164 (talk) 04:43, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

"Slur" is inflammatory and opinionated

The use of the term slur should be considered very carefully, and should certainly be removed from this article. It is pejorative, but the majority of pejorative language is not considered a slur. The use of the word 'worm' has specific etymological implications within anti-capitalist economic philosophy, namely, that traditionally capitalist roles in society such as that of a landlord are 'parasitic' like some worms. The article should expand to include references to the Marxist political philosophy from which this term stems, and refrain from making moral judgment on the use of the term. 68.248.141.254 (talk) 03:09, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

I am unsure of what you want us to do. The article very clearly includes the specific instance of the word that caused its popularity, as well as its growing use as a political weapon. It's not used against a specific ethnic group, it's used against a certain political persuasion (within a certain country). That's like saying 'Repthugs' or 'Democraps', 'Trumptards', 'shitlibs' or the earlier 'teabaggers' are ethnic slurs against Americans because they allude to political persuasions among Americans. Slur is an insinuation or allegation about someone that is likely to insult them or damage their reputation by Oxford dictionary definition. The word fits the definition. Pejorative is a synonym for a slur that comes from latin peiorare (to make worse). I have added a paragraph to the "Usage in the United States" section about the words modern usage as a slur on social media like reddit and Twitter/X. I have included sources with my revision to support that. The attempt to change this page to be a pejorative from a slur is a part of an effort to soften the words usage in modern times on social media. This article was moved from "Gusano (slur) to Gusano (pejorative)" in this revision without explanation. As the article explains the words usage as it is targeted towards a specific ethnicity (cubans) it should be referenced as a slur. It is currently listed in the wikipedia template for ethnic slurs , as such the article should be moved back to "Gusano (slur)" and be referred to as a slur throughout for accuracy and consistency. Too narrow a definition?

Remember folks: Embrace the controversy

Obviously this word is controversial, and its very meaning has been the center of debate. (Is it political or is it ethnic?) It may be very tempting for editors to try to frame their opinion on the debate as fact, and thus ignore the debate itself. I think it is important for an encyclopedia to archive the debate itself, and give it fair coverage (no matter what side of the debate you may find yourself on). • Support making the nickname the primary topic. I agree with both Zxcvbnm and Mangokeylime, as the DAB page's introductory line mentions the term translating to worm in Spanish, which is what the nickname is.
