Pronunciation

The Pronunciation of Gullane is usually either ['gʌlɪn] probably a spelling pronunciation and ['gɪlɪn] the traditional local dialect pronunciation.^[1] In 1944, a former Gullane minister mentioned that old folk pronounced it Goolan. In Older Scots 'u' was also used to represent a vowel pronounced /ø/ hence the Scots spelling gude or guid for good, 'oo' being the spelling in Standard English cognates. As a result of sound shifts the original /ø/ became /ɪ/ in Central Scots varieties which would result in the pronunciation ['gɪlɪn].

The New Statistical Account of Scotland (1841)^[2] also suggests a Brythonic origin for the name as an older spelling was Golyn, signifying a little lake.
