[edit]I heard an interesting anecdote about the development of GSL and I wanted to know if it was true: In the story there is a change in government in Guatemala and it is decided to unify the sign language. All of the locals are brought together to learn some Latin American sign instead of their own local “house” signs. But over the course of a few weeks the children at the learning camp have created their own distinct language which is adopted as the national standard. This story was used as an example of children being the source of new languages (while adults form creole languages).
