Huh?

huh??!?? Maybe it is because my mother tongue is not english but this explanation does nothing for me. If the purpose of these words are to impart knowledge this fails dismally. I see a lot of talk where people talk about having things at a more granular level but the meaning escapes me entirely and an article like this does not make the subject any more accessible to the lay person. Granular as a word I suspect is related to a grain as in a grain of sand or are there other contexts in which the word can be used which could be the couse of my struggle to visualize the concept? --Renier Maritz 08:24, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Grains of sand is exactly the right metaphor. A large-grained (coarser) view means that you are looking at larger features of a system and neglecting smaller-scale properties. A small-grained (finer) view means that you are looking at smaller features of a system, which may imply access to larger scale properties as well. The term "granular computing" is one of these over-broad terms (like cybernetics) that does not (yet) have any specific set of methods or algorithms associated with it.
