Name

As with Osney Footbridge, I have my doubts about the correct name of this bridge and would welcome evidence from an additional source to 'Where Thames Smooth Waters Glide'. Omassey (talk) 23:13, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

The Environment Agency uses "Grandpont Bridge" here, p.37. Confusingly the same source refers to "Osney Footbridge" (the Gasworks Bridge) as "Road Bridge", which must be wrong. --Mhockey (talk) 19:13, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Yes it is all confusing - the article reflects this. What do local maps say? "Smooth Waters" refers to the Oxford Footbridge and it is generally pretty reliable. If I remember rightly there is some sort of plaque on or around the bridge itself. Up to local knowledge really, but Grandpont is potentially confusing. You could read "Smooth Waters" as referring to it as "an Oxford footbridge", i.e. the author could not find its name. I do not think that Folly Bridge was ever called "Grandpont Bridge". Folly Bridge was part of what was called the "Grandpont" in the Middle Ages, a time when "Grandpont Bridge" would have been tautologous. The Grandpont gave its name to the district south of the river, and the footbridge was named after the district. It is not a very old bridge. According to the maps on www.old-maps.co.uk, the bridge did not exist in 1947 but did in 1960. --Mhockey (talk) 22:28, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

On their website Oxford City Council refers to this bridge as the "Gasworks Pipe Bridge" (although the Assessment Report linked to on that page refers to it as the "Isis Gasworks Footbridge"). Shinigami27 (talk) 16:01, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
