How much would can a woodchuck chuck?

[edit]

These events either happened or did not happen. If they did not, let's not suggest that they did; if they did, I think we can reasonably say so with a clear old past indicative. Let's chuck the "would"s.

The story of Jim Gaff's purchasing the hotel is a common story in our family (Jim was my great-grandfather's step-brother; see www.graysgoingback.myheritage.com for details). As my father tells the story, "Jim asked 'How much for a room?' and when the clerk told him, Jim said, 'Christ, man, I only want to rent a room, not buy the hotel!' The clerk sneered that Gaff probably didn't have enough money to pay for a room, let alone the hotel. Gaff asked how much the hotel would sell for, and wrote a cheque on the spot." When the cheque cleared, Jim owned the hotel. Graywriter (talk) 20:29, 3 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
