Translations of Google Translate to Additional Wiki’s
[edit]This Google Translate Article is written in 120 languages
- Google Translate Supports over 200 languages
- Wikipedia Supports over 300 languages
So: 80 minimum languages are needing pages for Google Translate articles
If possible, Wikipedia needs someone to write these pages. Twillisjr (talk) 14:55, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
- You can propose it here. Joseph (talk) 16:25, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
- Wonderful suggestion, could you perhaps start the proposal and link me? Twillisjr (talk) 16:15, 24 December 2025 (UTC)

Revision Request for Launch Date
[edit]I would like to suggest a revision to the launch date mentioned in the article for Google Translate. The current semi-protected page states that the service was started in April 2006, but I believe this date does not reflect the history of the service.
The Wikipedia article for Google Translate was created on November 24, 2005. The revision for December 19, 2005 already shows the service was active.

The Wayback Machine shows that by October 4, 2001, Google could translate web pages for the public:
http://web.archive.org/web/20011004203626/http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en
And by December 2, 2001, it could now translate text:

A blog post on Google's site acknowledges the 2001 start date:

This page also supports 2001:

As well as this page:

I'm not sure why that Independent article and Wikipedia says it launched in April 2006, when it was already available to the public for five years. I would appreciate it if these sources could be referenced in the article to provide a more accurate timeline of Google Translate's public availability. Thank you. ~2026-21455-87 (talk) 03:51, 12 April 2026 (UTC)
- Hi @~2026-21455-87, the page you linked says that Google offered a translation service previously: "In 2001, Google started providing a service that could translate eight languages to and from English." (https://translate.googleblog.com/2012/04/breaking-down-language-barriersix-years.html). From what I understand:
- In 2001, Google started offering translations using systran.
- In 2006, "Google Translate" started.
- Joseph (talk) 15:40, 12 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Joseph Yes, Google started a translation service in 2001. It didn't start in 2006. The system powering Google Translate may change over the years, but that does not mean that the date of the start of the service changes.
- Look at these archived pages of Google Translate. One is from June 2005, before the April 2006 "start date".
- The other is from July 2006.
- They're both the same page except for a change in the copyright year. They both have "Google Translate" on the header. How could Google have "Google Translate" in 2005? Because it didn't start in 2006. It started in 2001. ~2026-21455-87 (talk) 17:21, 12 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Joseph Here's a link to a USA Today page from 2001, mentioning Google's translation service: http://web.archive.org/web/20011212050122/http://www.usatoday.com/life/cyber/2001/12/07/hotsites.htm ~2026-21455-87 (talk) 19:04, 12 April 2026 (UTC)
- You're right. This should be written at least in the history section. Joseph (talk) 19:57, 12 April 2026 (UTC)
- I found two more 2001 links about Google Translate that may be helpful for rewriting. I cannot rewrite the Wikipedia article because it is semi-protected.
- May 21, 2001 page from Google mentioning the service using "machine translation technology".
- May 15, 2001 FAQ page about Google's translation technology. Note that the last question on the FAQ asks when Google will make a form to input text in to have it translated. This text box can be seen in the December 2, 2001 link I provided above. The question remains on the FAQ page until November 13 and is removed on the November 14 revision. Not that this is a definite start date for the text box translation--it could be that Google made the decision earlier and rewrote the FAQ in mid-November, then debuted the text box in early December. Though, it could be some other way. At least it can help narrow things down. ~2026-21455-87 (talk) 06:48, 14 April 2026 (UTC)
