I was feeling particularly bold today and decided that a merger of girdling and http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ring_barking&redirect=no was in order. Same process, multiple names. Damage to Xylem Preventing Healing

The article states, "Healing can only happen when the xylem is not cut into and damaged." This is patently false. If this were true, grafting would not be possible. Girding not girdling

The term is 'girding a tree'. 'Girdling' is a backformation from girdle. People mishear the term and popularize it on the internet - like here on Wikipedia. 2607:FB91:BD5D:51A4:1E06:40D0:18F1:2958 (talk) 23:02, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

Notable case in Halifax

The case of vandalism-based girding, which was never solved, in Halifax's Public Gardens should maybe be added? The case involved the girding of numerous rare and unique trees, including an American chestnut and trees that had survived the Halifax Explosion, trees over a hundred years old, and many of the trees died. It led to an uproar from locals, including schoolchildren who made numerous "get well soon" cards for the trees. The case remains unsolved.
