This is a guy who denounced Andrew Jackson as a cut-throat and a murderer. While the Racine Argus (of which he owned a piece) described its politics as "Jeffersonian Democratic", contemporary accounts describe the Captain himself as a Whig (see Racine, Belle City... p. 262).
