[edit]LukeEmily, i am confused that whether it was a surname associated with Marathi Brahmins or not. Somewhere else, i have read that Ghorpade was one of the branch of Bhonsale clan, which is associated with Kunbi caste. So why this difference here. - @Admantine123:, I looked up the sources. It is found in multiple castes Marathas, Brahmins, Mahars and Chambhar.[1] Bhosle is also found in Mahars etc. One thing that Irawati Karve has discovered is that if a Maratha clan name is also found as a last name (for example Bhosle is a clan name and last name), then that name is found in Mahars also. This is no longer so when people move away from their native village and especially when family names like Chavan , Bhonsle , Kale , Ghorpade when family names like Chavan , Bhonsle , Kale , Ghorpade , are found among Brahmins , Marathas , artisans and [former]untouchable castes like the Mahar and Chambhar.
