Barlaam of Calabria, Orthodox theologian and Greek mentor to the poet Petrarch, served as bishop of Gerace from 1341-42 till his death in 1348. Edward Lear, British nonsense-verse writer (e.g., "The Owl and the Pussycat"), painter, and traveler visited Gerace during his 1840s sojourn in Southern Italy.
