Tool mediation

[edit]

Tool mediation was an insight into the learning process by the Russian education researcher Vygotsky [1]. Vygotsky argued that tools in learning have the property of 'reverse action' in which the tool influences student behaviour as well as acting as an instrument in students hands, tools therefore both guide and constrain the way in which we learn[2]. In education tools can be conceptual, such as language, or they can be physical, such as for instance Cuisenaire™ brand rods or theMathomat™ geometry template in mathematics.
