[ smervin 3/07 added sentence about Harvard Lab (LCGSA) to the History section. Also started separate wiki page about LCGSA but got 'speedily deleted' by zealous Wiki Admin who claimed "no assertion of notability"]

Ijnitial text
[edit]Regarding the capitalization of this title: the first paragraph says a Geographic..., which would seem to imply that this is a generic term for a class of things called geographic information systems. I don't know--is that the case, or is there a specific thing called the Geographic Information System, which would merit the capitals but would require editing the text here? -- Lee Daniel Crocker
I'm taking some GIS courses right now, and the answer is yes it is a general term. maveric149
It is a general term, but since "GIS" is a very common abbreviation, I think it does merit the capitalisation. -- Sam
- Huh? It is a completely fallacious assumption to think that since an acronym (NOT abbreviation!) is capitalized that the root term must also be capitalized. --mav
Any expert in constructing isohyets available?
[edit]Metadata, Cataloguing and Discoverability
[edit]A vital part of a scalable Geographic Information System is the ability to find the right data and parse it correctly from server to client. In the vast majority of cases, this is achieved via metadata and searchable catalogues, rather than a spatial or aspatial search of the data itself. There have been a wide range of proprietary and open tools/specs over the years aiming to address discoverability- e.g. ArcCatalog, GeoNetwork, STAC.
However, there is only one mention of metadata and none of catalogues on this page. Perhaps as part of the current AFI week, we could identify an appropriate point in the article to give an overview of what metadata and cataloguing is in GIS contexts, with a conceptual link to the other fundamental parts of the system? - Within Web GIS there is a section on the geospatial semantic web. I believe this could be tossed in with such a section. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 13:14, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
