Notable investments table — WP:NOTDIRECTORY, WP:PROMO, WP:OR, WP:SYNTH concerns

[edit]

@GhostOrbit: I reverted the "Notable investments" table earlier and you reinstated it. Rather than revert again, I want to lay out the policy concerns here and invite discussion.

WP:NOTDIRECTORY / WP:NOTCATALOG. Wikipedia is not a structured catalog of a firm's portfolio. A table breaking investments out by company, category, fund, round, amount, and date is reference-catalog content of the kind WP:NOT warns against.

WP:PROMO. The current selection is a highlight reel of successes (Airbnb, Anduril, Mistral, Helsing, Grammarly's $1B non-dilutive deal, etc.). Failures, write-downs, and exits at a loss do not appear. Pre-selecting a firm's winners in a structured showcase format is promotional by construction, even where individual citations may be considered reliable under WP:RS.

WP:OR (selection). No secondary source is cited establishing that these specific companies constitute General Catalyst's "notable investments." The selection is editorial judgment, which is original research. The neutral alternative is to cover only deals that reliable sources specifically characterize as significant to the firm's history.

WP:SYNTH (fund attribution). The "Fund" column maps specific investments to specific fund vehicles. The cited sources report the investments but do not attribute them to specific GC fund vehicles. Mapping investments to funds requires combining SEC filings with press coverage to reach conclusions neither source states independently, which is textbook synthesis.

I'd suggest removing the Notable investments table and instead incorporating specific deals into History-section prose where RS establish their significance to the firm's story. I'm not opposed to the separate Funds table, which has a defensible basis in SEC Form D filings for documenting GC's own fund vehicles.

Happy to discuss. Pinging for broader input as well. Zxm92 (talk) 17:06, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for clarifying and I apologise. I'm still learning the ropes here, and could have sworn I added the table, then came back and didn't see it so thought I was mistaking. I didn't think to look at teh history and see if it was reverted.
I'll be more careful going forward.
Again sorry for missing that you had reverted. GhostOrbit (talk) 06:43, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
