Crisps / potato chips

I am not au fait with the finer details of American potato chips, but I am mystified as to the distinction between a "game chip" and a British "crisp", other than game chips tending to be cooked and served as part of a hot meal, whereas chips are usually made commercially and come, cold, in a packet, possibly with some salt in a blue paper spill.
