"The galli castrated themselves"

The article states the Galli "castrated themselves". It seems hard to believe when compared to typical human practices accross history and cultures. Is this really accurate and not based on exaggerated accounts or symbolic representations?

The source book by Vermaseren states: "The galli, carried away by the music, imitated Attis, performing the emasculation - according to an old ceremonial - in a most primitive and highly dangerous fashion with the aid of such instruments as a sharp stone497 (saxo acuto), a potsherd 498 (testa Sarnia) or a knife. 499"
