Thickness of stretchers vs whether staples show on sides?

The statement in the article "First, the stretcher bars are thinner allowing the staples to show on the sides of the wood" implies that the thickness of the stretcher is what determines whether the staples show. Isn't where the staples are driven (side vs back of the stretchers) what determines whether staples show? To accept a 1/2" staple on the back, a stretcher does not have to be very thick. Stretcher bars do vary in thickness depending on the size of frame required but it would be uncommon to use 1/2" staples due to the fact they would not drive completely into the wood. 8mm to 10mm staples are frequently used because they have a better chance of being driven flush into the wood without the need of hammering after. In all circumstances where staples are used they will be visible at the back of the frame where they fasten the canvas to the frame.
