Misnomer in archaeological literature

This article is about draw gags, not gag bits and thinks they are the same thing. They are not.

This whole Wikipedia page is essentially misinformation and factually totally incorrect. I found more things wrong, than right. Which is quite the achievement.
This page is clearly about draw gags but claims to be about gag bits, these are two distinct different types of setups that work with opposing effects. A draw gag is when you have a poll rope/metal that pulls the poll and aims to keep the head high, it is a rein configuration where your rein is connected to the poll for direct feedback. A draw gag is an inherently unfair type of rein setup with conflicting signals to the horse. It is only used in polo and barrel-racing, it is banned for all English sanctioned riding and is not used outside of those disciplines.
An actual gag bit just means it has a sliding cheekpiece, with no poll-connection. These are not the same thing, they do not work by the same mechanism and have nothing to do with each other. There is no such thing even as a draw gag with gag bit, as they are conflicting mechanisms. A draw gag is not a subtype of gag bit, and you cannot combine a draw gag with a gag bit.
Draw gags are banned in all sanctioned English disciplines. FEI and USEF rules explicitly prohibit draw gags (and any rein‑to‑poll leverage systems) as unsafe and inhumane. They are not legal in eventing, show jumping, hunters, dressage, or any other regulated English sport. Their use is limited to polo and certain Western speed events. The page claims otherwise.
The page also has no idea what is a mouth-piece vs cheekpiece/rein configurations. Bevel bits are not gag bits either, it is a type of a snaffle. This article conflates a type of a mouth piece with a rein setup, having nonsense like "running gags are in shape like a snaffle". Snaffle is a type of a mouth-piece, a running gag is a type of a rein configuration, how could these two possibly be related? You can have a Running Gag with a Mullen mouthpiece, and it will still be a Running Gag. Because the Running Gag has absolutely nothing to do with the actual mouth-piece. Also, a Duncan gag is just a type of a running gag.
In short, hhis whole article is utter trash and none of it is correct.

- A bevel is still a gag just a milder one than most. I do agree that draw gags are inhumane though. I believe to clear some of this up someone could clarify the difference between true, sliding gags and faux, ringed gags. And yeah the whole articale is just... trash. ~2026-24365-03 (talk) 23:50, 4 June 2026 (UTC)
