I asked what fraction of cells in an adult human are dividing. The answer provided by the search-engine/ai was that about 1 percent were actively dividing at any one time and that the vast majority of these were blood and intestinal cells. I suppose a cell doesn't have to leave the cell cycle to not be actively dividing - depending on how you define that, but surely a large number of cells are fully differentiated and therefore in G0. If so, why in the world isn't that mentioned here?? If I've got that wrong, then this should be an explicit part of the article, I think.~2026-92463-4 (talk) 21:17, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Stem cells?

The Diversity of states section has this line:"Finally, differentiated cells are stem cells that have progressed through a differentiation program to reach a mature – terminally differentiated – state." By definition stem cells are not fully differentiated. Therefore fully differentiated cells can not be stem cells. I think it's fair to say that all cells originate from stem cells. (eukaryotic, that is.) I think it is incorrect to say they "are" stem cells. Differentiated cells are the result of one (?) or more mitotic division of precursor (stem) cells. They are daughter cells. Frankly, I see no good reason to use the word "stem" in the quoted sentence. I think it would be better without it. Also, I think the sentence is wrong. I think all (eukaryotic) cells other than the zygote are at least partially differentiated and most certainly aren't terminally differentiated. I'm not a subject matter expert and I wonder if it is true that terminally differentiated cells don't undergo mitosis? (Their daughter cells would have to be functionally identical to their parent, if this were possible.) I also don't know how someone could satisfactorily prove this doesn't happen, at least not till we have studied most of the myriad of eukaryotic cell types. My point is that terminal differentiation as a synonym for full differentiation need not imply G0.
