Usage of this term

I ran a couple of searches on Google Scholar – 5,500 hits for "functional relation" under mathematics, and 3,300 hits under humanities. I reviewed some (~50 extracts) of the information from the humanities batch, and noticed that this phrase is used at least two different ways in the scholarly literature.

Specifically, when social scientists/philosophers are talking about the treatment of statistical data, they invariably use "functional relation" exactly as it's described in this article. However, when discussing things like human behavior, or the connections between stimuli and perceptions, the phrase is often used imprecisely, more along the lines of cause and effect than in a quantifiable or numerical sense. For the time being, I have redirected this to the right section of binary relation. If anyone every wants to write a long article about this, feel free (but I'll be surprised). No reference

This term is made-up. There is no reference at binary relation. An internet search did not turn up any reference. The correct term is univalent relation. This redirect has been proposed for deletion. Rgdboer (talk) 22:24, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
