Fourth Wall Break

I just made an edit that involved this (), not realizing this discussion was underway. AFAICS, Cowboy is not talking to us as viewers of this movie, he is talking to viewers of the movie being made within this movie by a documenting film crew that are themselves characters in this movie.. Cowboy's remark is not made in isolation but is one of a number of similarly irreverent remarks made by other squad members shown being filmed. Perhaps it would be better here, instead of quoting Cowboy in isolation, to say something like "Later, during a break in combat, Lusthog squad members make on-camera remarks trivializing the war to a documenting film crew." @Wtmitchell that's the rub! the vital part of that scene and quote is that everyone except Cowboy looks at the on-screen camera, whereas Cowboy looks at ours. the content of the line ("this is a movie") has the character, briefly but directly, acknowledge the fiction of the film. cowboy is talking to us as viewers of a movie, though it's presented as the irreverent John Wayne bit. I re-watched that segment a few more times and I don't see a diegetic event here, but I'm not into moviemaking as a craft (I had to look that wikilinked term up). Watching the scene, my major focus is on the film crew in the foreground, not on the Lusthog squad members in the background and certainly not on specifically where those individuals seem to be looking as they throw out their remarks shown as being filmed there. I don't think this has due weight for mention in the article as a fourth wall breakage unless there is support for an assertion that Kubrick intended it as such and, even with such support, it should probably be mentioned in a footnote rather than a piped wikilink. The early screenplay previously cited here in a link you've removed has major differences from the movie as released, but it contains a scene with those irreverent remarks on pages 74-76 and I don't see a fourth wall breakage there either. WP:BRD discussion

This is a WP:BRD discussion re this reversion by @Ray the Anarchist:. I re-watched the scene at issue before making the reverted edit; it shows several explosions to the front of Marines advancing in the Battle of Hue followed by the collapse and death of Lieutenant Walter J. "'Mr. Touchdown" Schinoski who had been leading the advance behind a tank partially screening him. My reverted edit changed the characterization of the explosion apparently causing his collapse and death as "a bombing" to "apparently by shrapnel". From what I remember, the NVA had no air support that might be dropping nombs, and the film does not suggest they did. I considered a characterization as "NVA mortars", but decided against that. The current article version is inaccurate in this regard and I suggest that my edit be restored, possibly with improvements. Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 01:38, 7 February 2026 (UTC)
