"Friends of Bill" is indeed a euphemism for members of Alcoholics Anonymous. It's a code-phrase you can use when you don't want to reveal your association with the AA, as in, "Will any Friends of Bill be at the convention?" how unfortunate is the name?
[edit]It's interesting that FoA is directly compared to a self-help organization for alcohol addicts AND to a discreet term for gay men. If this was intentional, it ought to be directly discussed in the article. If it was unintentional, then the general lack of self-aware irony of the group's membership could be explored.
