  • ... that the North Korean propaganda song "Friendly Father" went viral on TikTok following its release, with some users comparing it to the songs of Swedish supergroup ABBA?
  • Source: Mao, Frances (3 May 2024). "TikTok loves North Korea's latest propaganda bop. Why?". BBC. Retrieved 11 May 2024. When North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un released his latest song two weeks ago, surely he couldn't have foreseen it becoming a hit on TikTok. But the propaganda tune has gone viral online with Gen Z users bopping around to the synthy-electro pop. ... But there is a certain Soviet-era tinge to it; Gen Z users describe it as 'Abba-coded', a reference to the Swedish superband.

General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems
Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation
    QPQ: Done.

Overall: Nifty, precise article. Nicely written, well sourced and verifiable. The only copied parts are quotes, which are cited so no issues there. The article had some minor copy editing issues, and I've done them myself (also removed half a sentence for which I was unable to find any supporting reference). It's now good to go. Small note: It'd be better if you wiki-linked the publications of the citations. I've also adjusted the hook (Tik Tok - TikTok).  Preceding unsigned comment added by Xoak (talkcontribs) 03:47, 17 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I just realised that Father's Day coincides with the potential timeframe of this hook being promoted, if no issues arise. I am requesting that this hook be held in the special occasion holding area for Father's Day, if other DYK contributors are in agreement. Yue🌙 01:15, 3 June 2024 (UTC) On second thought, nevermind. I plan to review this.

    GA review
(see here for what the criteria are, and here for what they are not)
    1. It is reasonably well written.
a (prose, spelling, and grammar): WP:EARWIG finds no copyvios. The prose reads well to me. I don't see any obvious grammatical or spelling errors. checkY
b (MoS for lead, layout, word choice, fiction, and lists): The lead is an appropriate length and the formatting of the article and sections are good. checkY
    2. It is factually accurate and verifiable, as shown by a source spot-check.
a (references): My first concern is from sources 2 and 3, on the first sentence of the Release section. The sentence says that the song was performed live by a person named Kim Ryu Kyong, but neither source cited to that sentence mentions this person's name. Where did Kim Ryu Kyong come from? Addressed. Additional spot checks for sources 14, 16, and 18 are good. checkY
b (citations to reliable sources): checkY
c (OR): See above re: Kim Ryu Kyong. Addressed checkY
d (copyvio and plagiarism): WP:EARWIG finds no copyvios. The closest is a direct quote, which is fine. checkY
    3. It is broad in its coverage.
a (major aspects): Major aspects of the song (release, style/composition, and reception) are covered. checkY
b (focused): The article does not go off-topic. checkY
    4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
Fair representation without bias: It is about as neutral as one can be on the subject of North Korean propaganda. checkY
    5. It is stable.
No edit wars, etc.: I see no edit warring in the page history. checkY
    6. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales): The title card in the infobox has proper fair use rationale. An image of Kim Jong Un might be good to have, but it's not necessary. checkY
b (appropriate use with suitable captions): checkY

    Overall:
    Pass/Fail: checkY

Hi @Yue:, if you could address the above concerns that would be greatly appreciated. Additionally, I would suggest perhaps adding a footnote explaining that Kim Ryu Kyong and Kim Jong Un are not related and that Kim is the most common surname in Korea, because that might not be obvious to readers. @ArtemisiaGentileschiFan: Hi! Thank you for doing this review. I added a note for Kim Ryu Kyong's name and a new source for her performance on 16 April 2024. Whichever source I initially found her in, I did not have in the first version of the article and must have lost or misplaced it while editing in my sandbox. Yue🌙 17:54, 6 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Wonderful, thank you. Congrats on the GA! ArtemisiaGentileschiFan (talk) 19:38, 6 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
