Anecdote about Thompson.After many good years as a regular with the Phillies,Thompson was warming the bench for the 1934 New York Giants and not happy about it.

So when Giant manager Bill Terry told him to go in as a pinch-runner,Thompson replied--"Gee,thanks,but I've just had my shoes shined".
