Hey, was anything done for the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Charter? There's nothing when I googled it that would lead me to believe that there was. -Jesus geek

Hi @Likeanechointheforest: I've reverted the removal of the full text. This is a key historical document, and the text, or at the very least a link to the text, needs to be there. I chose to include the full text of the Freedom Charter because it stands as one of the most pivotal documents in modern South African history. Presenting it as an image would undermine its accessibility and significance—Wikipedia is not a picture book, nor is its purpose to redirect readers off-site for essential content. My reference comes from an article written by one of the Charter’s original drafters, and I modeled the presentation on the style of two foundational Wikipedia entries: the American Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. These articles treat their source texts with the gravity they deserve, and I believe the Freedom Charter warrants the same respect. To grasp its importance, one must understand its profound impact: it shaped the lives of millions of South Africans, influenced international political stances, and catalysed major historical shifts. The Charter contributed to the banning of both the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party, inspired anti-apartheid movements across the Western world, and became a non-negotiable foundation for the ANC during its unbanning and the CODESA negotiations. Ultimately, it laid the groundwork for South Africa’s first democratic election in 1994. Most importantly, the Freedom Charter remains the philosophical and structural core of the South African Constitution.
