Nobility

Snapdragonfly, can I enquire from where you have the information that Charette was not noble ? It seems very bizarr to me: he has a typical noble name, a typical noble work, and everywhere I look, it seems that he was from a noble family ( says that he was the descendant to the 13th generation of a knight made a noble by Duguesclin... that's be quite a nobility ! :p Rama 21:17, 22 August 2005 (UTC)

That's quite right, nice thing to have people intersted.

That said, d'Elbée was an army officer before the Vendean war, so the chances that he was a nobleman, especially with this name, are high; his family had been "un-noble" in the 17th century, but it seems that by the 18th, tey were noblemen. Aren't you thinking of Jacques Cathelineau ? (Note: is very useful.. :P )

Anyway, these nobility thingies are a real nightmare to sort out. It is a sport favoured amongst the nobility, and one of the good reasons to have a republic, if you ask me ! :D Rama 19:29, 23 August 2005 (UTC)

I seem to recall that he was for some time an officer in the Empire because of the limitations on promotion to non-nobles. As for monarchy; at least they're honest about being an unequal society. ;p Snapdragonfly 19:44, 23 August 2005 (UTC)

Oh yes ! Well, his father worked in Dresden for the king of Poland, so he quite naturally joined the army of Saxe; in fact he came back to France later, where indeed his career went so slow that he decided to resign (or so gvendee.free.fr says :p). Rama 20:44, 23 August 2005 (UTC)
