Still don't get it

Simon T: Forward assist is just a way of making sure the ejector catch engages the rim of the round... As mentioned in the article, if you pushed the bolt forward gently (not using its own momentum and force from the sprint) it may not engage. This was only brought in with the L85A1 (SA80) in the mid 90s due to battlefield experience as I got caught out by this during my service. (having said that, our unit was using FN FALs until the early 90s so were very late adopters of the "new" LA85A1 - in fact we were still using Sterling SMGs as main firearms for certain trades at this point). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.35.222.53 (talk) 18:40, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

TAP FORWARD is the IW drill. Not Forward Assist. It should only be done when a mag is fitted to the weapon. However for simplicity most teach that it be done whenever the working parts go forward.

M16 Series

Shouldn't the M16 be included? Besides the SA80, the M16 has a dedicated button that must be depressed after cocking. Standard military procedure still mandates the use of the button. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.234.79.254 (talk) 22:41, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
