Black-face vs. Clown-face ...
[edit]Just putting it out there - but during these "woke" times - Richard Elfman is the first to point out having black-face images was a bad choice, and it was always meant to be clown-face, and they'd run out of money for re-shoots, etc., etc., etc. IF that was the original intent, why was Huckleberry P. Jones EVER filmed in black-face? No clown make-up available?
C'mon Mr.E. - just own up. Back in the 70's & 80's, folks were still pretty insensitive and ignorant about the subject. (Not to mention the idea for "The Mystic Knights" name was inspired by the old radio show "Amos & Andy" - a radio show featuring black characters portrayed by white men.) The film was a kitsch experiment poking fun at "old timey" ideals in Hollywood - sex, black-face, heaven & hell, stereotype Jewish folks, Fleischer Brothers cartoons, Zoot suiters, Busby Berkeley musical numbers, etc. Unfortunately, fewer folks at the turn of the century, just discovering these works, don't have any concept of those times. Not excusing it, its just not for everybody. (And, add to the fact that the few reviewers of the time, never brought up the black-face elements, glossed right over it.) ~2026-22414-38 (talk) 07:24, 26 April 2026 (UTC)
