I think the Hibs and Renton matches stand up to scrutiny as they were top clubs who had called them world club cups beforehand.

First match

Somebody needs to work out whether the first was in 1886 or 1887, and whether the result was Aston Villa 3-1 Hibernian at Perry Barr in Birmingham on 9 April 1887 or Hibernian 2-1 Preston North End at Hibernian Park in Edinburgh on 13 August 1887. Yeah its a bit of a mess there. Seems there was more explanation of it until recently when info was removed due to being sourced to a Wikipedia mirror site of the match articles. But that doesn't mean that the info itself was wrong. I'll have a look at each of these, and hopefully the Glasgow Herald (which has a free archive) or The Scotsman (via the London Hearts website) will have some decent descriptions which will help to clarify these issues properly. Need for reconsideration?

This article appears to be original research - it is bringing together the results of various friendly matches between the top English and Scottish sides. None of them was considered a world championship, other than the Renton v West Brom match. It's all very interesting but it is putting 20th century views on 19th century football. E.g. nobody thought of "home and home" friendlies as 2 legs of the same competition. Even the Renton claim is dubious given they commissioned their own cup after their annus mirabilis.
