Adding peer-reviewed research and correcting the Gill and Brajer summary

[edit]

I am a student editor working on this article. The article currently cites one peer-reviewed study and sources most of its claims to sports journalism, so I am adding research from the cognitive and sports economics literature.

Additions: a Research section covering Woods et al. (2015) on how football experience affects judgments of pass interference, and Boone et al. (2025) on cognitive testing of NFL quarterbacks. Also Pitts and Evans (2018), which found Wonderlic scores positively correlated with quarterback performance, since the current text presents the question as settled when the literature is divided.

One correction: the article states that a 2011 study "found a discrepancy in the rise of draft positions between white and black players," cited to a 2022 New York Times article. The underlying study is Gill and Brajer (2012) in the Journal of Sports Economics. That result comes from their baseline model, the racial difference was not statistically significant (p = .23), and their preferred estimates found no difference by race. Their stated conclusion is that they found little meaningful evidence of statistical discrimination. I propose replacing that sentence with one reflecting the paper, cited directly to it.

Happy to discuss before I make the replacement. Mistameat101 (talk) 16:57, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
