Changed start date to 1713
[edit]Moved the EBSCO article by Richard Sheposh down to the External Links section, and changed the 1706 start dates to 1713. The claims of a 1706 start date all seem to come from this article. Sheposh does not cite any courses for that claim (he just gives a bibliography) and some of the sources he does cite contradict the 1706 date. Example, the Medium article he lists says: “The true beginning of Nassau as a pirate republic can be traced to 1713, when Benjamin Hornigold arrived aboard the Ranger, seeking refuge in the harbour. … Together, these men and women, along with many others, were loosely known as the Flying Gang and they terrorised the waters of New Providence for nearly five years, proclaiming Nassau the world’s first pirate republic.” I chose 1713 because it coincides with the end of the War of Spanish Succession as well as Cockram’s 1713 raid using Nassau as a home port. Other pirate historians support the later date for the start of the republic: Woodard (cited several times in this article already) says 1715 with Hornigold’s arrival; David Marley in Pirates of the Americas also lists 1715, and David Cordingly in Pirate Hunter of the Caribbean also says 1715. There does not seem to be any substantial support among reliable sources (which cite sources for their claims) for a 1706 start date. TheLastBrunnenG (talk) 18:58, 1 January 2026 (UTC)
Merge proposal
