Flora Solomon, nee Benenson, was quoted in the article about Kim Philby. Flora Solomon, nee Benenson, was also the mother of Peter Benenson, who has his own reference and was the founder of Amensty International. Flora Solomon wrote her autobiography in 1984 entitled "A Woman's Way". Her co-autor was Barnett Litvinoff and the book was published by Simon & Schuster Inc., ISBN 0-671-46002-1. My comments provide more information on Mrs. Solomon and tie the above referenced Wikipedia sections together. I do not know whether Mrs Solomon is still alive but she was born in 1895 according to her autobiography so she would be 112 if she were still alive. —Preceding unsigned comment added by KavJack (talk • contribs)

Concentration camp

She had three siblings: an older brother, Jacob, who died in a German concentration camp during the First World War...

Imperial Germany did not maintain concentration camps as such. Given that it was 1939 I understand the New York Times using that wording, but it seems more likely that Jacob served in the Russian army and died in a prisoner of war camp. I'll try to obtain her memoirs to see if she mentions him. Mackensen (talk) 13:31, 11 February 2025 (UTC)

Flora does tell the story in her memoirs: Jacob ("Yasha") was working as a chemist in Berlin, and was interned some time after the Battle of Tannenberg, probably because he was a male foreign national of military age. He died in the Spanish flu epidemic, probably while still in an internment camp. Concentration camp would have been synonymous with such in 1939, but it would be misleading to let the original wording stand. Mackensen (talk) 01:05, 22 February 2025 (UTC)

Neutral Pov

Are they? The first claim is directly cited; stating that someone is "remembered" or known for something is common for biographical articles. As to the second, it's uncited, but if she was widowed and not remarry then she probably did raise him on her own. How would you suggest wording these statements differently? Well, Yeah, That's precisely why i didn't remove and rephrase it then and there and instead initiated this talk section. And, In my opinion the first example can be more encyclopdic and neutrally written, like, "Solomon is also noted for contributing to improvements in employee conditions at Marks & Spencer stores in the UK.". And, for the "raised Peter on her own" part, It's really just an excessive background details that don’t add encyclopedic value, WP:NOTEVERYTHING. So, I'd suggest to get rid of it altogether. I would disagree that the early death of a spouse is "excessive background" detail. That's a major event in anyone's life, and the child in question is notable in his own right.

Regarding Marks & Spencer, this is the existing passage:

Solomon is also remembered for improving employee conditions at Marks & Spencer stores in the UK.

This is your suggestion:

Solomon is also noted for contributing to improvements in employee conditions at Marks & Spencer stores in the UK.

They say the same thing, they're both (in my opinion) neutral, and I think the original wording is tighter. Mackensen (talk) 20:38, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
