Open source?

I know this isn't the best place to discuss this, but I would love to help create an open source, non-commercial, Wikipedia-like resource for flashcard content. The file format would preferably be compatible with one of the open source programs. If anybody else is interested in helping to build it, or knows of something like this that already exists, let me know on my talk page. --Arcadian 15:26, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

Pimsleur?

Are the references to the pimsleur language school really necessary in this and related entries? Seems like a marketing ploy, and since no other vendors are featured in the article (except for the commercial section), I'm not sure if it's appropriate.

You’re correct that Pimsleur is irrelevant – it uses spaced repetition, but is audio-only, not a flashcard program. I’ve accordingly removed Pimsleur references; it’s mentioned at spaced repetition.

I’ve moved ERO to a separate article, as it is an application of flashcards, rather than terribly relevant to flashcards themselves.

ERO appears to fail notability – for instance, the main Google ref is the WP page, and all references appear to be to the WP page (unsurprising, as the main reference is unpublished). It’s thus going to be deleted. The references, however, appear useful, and have been retained at Rote learning – thanks!

Missing the point

Probably me. What is that little pic at the top supposed to tell you? It tells me absolutely nothing (and I have made and used flashcards in training situations). Peridon (talk) 13:52, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

Why was the section on Math removed?

Reading Disentangled

The use of picture-and-word pairs dates back centuries earlier.

Nothing in Reading Disentangled suggests that the illustrations were intended to be used as flashcards. Original book The original book states:

The child is to name the picture, end either before or afterwards, to name the sound of first letter of the word, saying either P' puss, or puss P' as the teacher pleases. The pictures will be useful in impressing the sound on the child's memory.

Instead, the book instructs the teacher or child to point to the illustration or word on the page, such as:

It is a good plan to allow children, when taught in a class, to hold a straw in their hands, and as each of these words is pointed to by the teacher to direct all the children to point to a similar word in the columns in this and the preceding page.

There is no indication that the illustrations were meant to be used as separate cards. They simply associate a picture with a letter and a word to reinforce the letter's sound. Similar approaches had been used centuries earlier. Is the claim that these were flashcards simply Todd Pruzan's speculation? — HenryLi (Talk) 12:40, 3 July 2026 (UTC)
