I have rewritten this article to provide more detail, but also to shift the emphasis on references from websites and primary sources to the secondary sources that Wikipedia prefers. The preponderance of secondary sources refer to this battle (or fight or skirmish or action or charge, differences in terminology that have little consequence) using the name Monterey Pass, although there are some 19th century references to the alternative name, Monterey Gap.
