The name of the film's narrator has been discussed several times in the past. While the name "Jack" has been especially mentioned, in the script and on the DVD case and so forth, references indicate that the filmmakers intended for Norton's character to be nameless in the film itself. Listed genres must come from WP:SECONDARY sources with named authors describing the film in prose (rather than automated genre tags on web pages). I've seen good sources saying it is a psychological thriller or drama thriller. Roger Ebert described it as an action movie but he did not mention thriller. Hope that helps you decide what to do. If we list a genre in the first sentence, it should be a consensus genre that is found in multiple sources. If Collider and Screenrant are supported by a couple more sources then we can call it a consensus. Binksternet (talk) 20:11, 7 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
My point in sharing that is that Fight Club can't fit in any one genre since there is no majority of sources that agree on one. This has come up in the past at least twice before as seen here. What I linked above is part of an ongoing discussion since MOS:FILMGENRE has only one sentence. We don't actually have to pick one genre because if sources can't agree definitely on a genre, we can't put forth a definitive genre. It doesn't mean we can't write about genres later in the lead section or the article body. There isn't an absolute truth that any film must fit neatly into a genre. On the page for Sinners there is a citation in the opening sentence that describes the film has genre-defying and that it incorporates multiple genres. Perhaps something similar could be added to this pages opening sentence, and possibly include genres such as Black Comedy, Neo-Noir and Psychological Thriller, as long as there are enough sources to support it? Given the variance in how it's described, I think leaving the genre unstated in the lead is for the best. A recent edit, reverted and reimplemented, describes Fight Club as a 20th century franchise and adds it to the category. I have reverted it because I see no mention in the article of it being a franchise. The argument that a video game, blog, and foreign film are based on it are immaterial; while I'd argue those examples wouldn't constitute a franchise, the more important thing is that we need a WP:RS to describe it as a franchise in as many words. To pick a particular criteria to apply to Fight Club is very much WP:SYNTH. Without an RS to describe Fight Club as being a 20th century franchise, we cannot say it is a 20th century franchise. I recently reverted a change that changed For the film's 25th anniversary in October 2024, it was announced that Fincher was working on a 4K remaster of the film. After two years of restoration, the 4k remaster was screened in theaters for a one-night event on April 22, 2026, followed by an Ultra HD Blu-ray and digital release from 20th Century Studios on May 22.

I reverted it back because the antecedent is unclear. Is it the announcement? Fincher? The anniversary? While a reader could figure it out, we want the text to be clear enough that it doesn't have to be figured out per WP:CLARITY.
